The definition of learning in this context is leagues more basic than human thought processes. It's also primarily hand guided by humans, the actual output has just gone through a string of functions like regular math.

yeah you basically just train a function that takes numbers in and puts numbers out, it just depends on what the numbers represent, be that images, words, data, etc
"train" is just optimizing through an evaluation or through human grading

It's just instead of conventional math where you want this to be that, you take this and instead try to make it one of these few things. The output has groups based on priority or weight, instead of a single definable answer.

Not really, I don't think anyone wants that lol. but there are a few scientific research projects on bottom-up AI/ML as opposed to the more common top-down ones.(edited)
Facebook has one on object recognition, which is where AI memes came from, where you see a cat or whatever and it thinks it's an orange or apple or whatever lol
