most programmers sit in chairs for a living
  21. Jack PapelTeam

I've never used rust but python is pretty neat
  22. kalucky0Team

python can die but rust is good language
  23. Jack PapelTeam

    :(
  24. Aku

    Replying toJack PapelIs rust ducktyped?

rust is a compiled language and it has structs
  25. Jack PapelTeam

Doesn't answer my question but that's good to know
  26. cr24Team

    what does ducktyped mean
  27. Jack PapelTeam

    Ok
  28. cr24Team

it has a nice type system tho
  29. Dbp

Replying toJack PapelWait how is python and JavaScript not programming

in those cases, its more that they are scripting than programming, sure you can call bash programming but i feel like that complicates the discussion when it comes to java and c
  30. Jack PapelTeam

I'd consider scripting a subset of programming
  31. Dbp

rust is... rust, im not going to waste paragraphs to explain it and then probably get yelled at by 20 rust people
  32. Dbp

Replying toJack PapelI'd consider scripting a subset of programming

my issue with that, is, theres no subset for non scripting currently
  33. Jack PapelTeam

    Fair enough
  34. Dbp

i usually talking about c and java when i mention programming and when im being more generic and including scripting call it "coding"
  35. kalucky0Team

@CDAGaming use an international datetime format
  36. gudenau

Rust is designed to be hard to use, the two package managers you have to install are a bit excessive, the compilers don't always work, packages randomly break when downloading, nightly features are more new enough for some packages, the std lib is missing a lot, static linking by default to create huge binaries and use more memory, memory safety is a lie still segfaults, I'm probably missing stuff.
  37. kalucky0Team

I don't agree with any of that
  38. gudenau

This has been my experience with the language.
  39. kalucky0Team

It is one of the easiest languages I've ever used, the compiler is extremely fast and reliable, has great errors, there are packages for everything and I've never had any problems with them, nightly works fine even though it's nightly, I don't use std, binaries are very small and programs written is Rust are fast and use very little memory
  40. kalucky0Team

Replying togudenauIt took three days of retrying clean installs to get it to install correctly and have…

You have to be doing something wrong because it always works great for me
  41. gudenau

It never works for me even when copying the instructions and pasting them into my terminal.
  42. kalucky0Team

It's the best language I've used And you shouldn't be copy pasting instructions into terminal
  43. gudenau

If rustPacakeManager install nightly destroys my system it isn't my fault.
  44. AzzyypaarasTeam

  45. kalucky0Team

  46. AzzyypaarasTeam

Well, a titan and a ghost
  47. gudenau

I didn't copy and paste everything blindly, I read through it and copied it to make sure it was right.(edited)

Replying togudenauWill since you love it, how do I use a and o files?

wtf are a and o files
  58. gudenau

Archive and object, do you not use assembly, C or C++?
  59. kalucky0Team

I know, but in that context
  60. gudenau

To use C/C++ where Rust is forced.
  61. AzzyypaarasTeam

    :chad:
  62. kalucky0Team

    What for
  63. gudenau

Well I want to use Rust thunks to jump to C so I don't lose my mind.
  64. cr24Team

I've never had those problems with rust either
  65. gudenau

I followed the directions, Rust isn't ready for use yet.
  66. kalucky0Team

    But it works great
  67. gudenau

You know the weirdest thing about this toolchain?
  68. kalucky0Team

    tell me
  69. gudenau

It's forcing Rust on top of something that used C++.
  70. kalucky0Team

What are you trying to do exactly?
  71. gudenau

It's a game modding toolchain and the only one for this game.
  72. kalucky0Team

    Maybe the toolchain is fucked
  73. gudenau

The game was written in C++ and we have access to a bunch of symbols.

  78. kalucky0Team

  79. AzzyypaarasTeam

Easy solution really, make your own toolchain
  80. gudenau

Isn't that going to help with that class? :^)
  81. gudenau

Replying toAzzyypaarasEasy solution really, make your own toolchain

That's not easy and it would likely break every single other mod for this game.
  82. AzzyypaarasTeam

    And?
  83. kalucky0Team

Nobody said it would be easy
  84. gudenau

    Rust isn't easy.
  85. kalucky0Team

    For you lol
  86. gudenau

It assumes you're an idiot and that makes it so hard to use.
  87. kalucky0Team

In what way does it assume that
  88. gudenau

All that memory safety junk that doesn't actually work.
  89. cr24Team

    it doesn't?
  90. kalucky0Team

It does, at least for me
  91. gudenau

    It doesn't.
  92. kalucky0Team

    Just learn to use it
  93. gudenau

    You fork and it segfaults.
  94. kalucky0Team

We are talking about two different languages then
  95. gudenau

    No.
  96. cr24Team

You can't use the borrow checker like other memory management
  97. kalucky0Team

I'm literally writing an OS in rust and it saved me a ton of times before doing some wacky memory shit
  98. cr24Team

also how tf are you even getting segfaults
  99. gudenau

    It was something like:
    fn main(){
        println!("Hello!");
        var pid = fork();
        if(pid < 0){
            println!("Failed");
        }else if(pid == 0){
            println!("Child");
        }else{
            println!("Parent");
        }
    }
Never printed child or parent, only segfaults.
  100. kalucky0Team

    Fork? Like the OS's fork?

  114. AzzyypaarasTeam

    Yes
  115. kalucky0Team

    ah
  116. Jack PapelTeam

Someone is criticized, and then they respond "Uhmm, I'm literally neurodivergent and a minor...?"
  117. AzzyypaarasTeam

But ND specifically tends to refer to brainnnnnmmmmm, most typically autism
  118. Jack PapelTeam

Also includes ADHD and OCD and pretty much anything under the sun that isn't a typical brain
  119. gudenau

C and C++ don't explode when you create a new process and Rust does. Forking is a critical task for a language. If you can't fork you can't do a lot of things.
  120. AzzyypaarasTeam

    It continues
  121. gudenau

Oh hey I can go do that thing now, cool.
  122. kalucky0Team

C/C++ have a little bit different paradigm than Rust And there are better ways than using fork Don't ask me what are they because I don't remember now
  123. gudenau

I started working on a minimal C++ program and someone told me to do it in Rust, took me a couple of hours to get that to compile and segfault.
  124. kalucky0Team

Well, if you prefer C++ and are better at it you should use it instead
  125. gudenau

fork is well defined and you know the exact state you'll be in after calling it based on the return code, calling out unsafe is dumb.
  126. kalucky0Team

It can, you just have to do some things differently
  127. AzzyypaarasTeam

Replying tokalucky0Well, if you prefer C++ and are better at it you should use it instead

I am pretty sure the reason why this argument even started is because he is being forced to use rust
  128. gudenau

You can't call a system call that takes no arguments differently.
  129. kalucky0Team

    You absolutely can
  130. gudenau

Sure there's an interpret and a syscall instruction, but still.
  131. kalucky0Team

It's a little bit more complicated that the C way
  132. gudenau

    That looks ugly as heck.
  133. kalucky0Team

    Because it is
  134. gudenau

Also, why does Rust use the weird {} formatting instead of the nice % formatting?
  135. kalucky0Team

    There is no difference
  136. cr24Team

how is % better than {} lol
  137. gudenau

    Yeah there is.
  138. kalucky0Team

{} feels more like most languages
  139. gudenau

    % is precise.
  140. AzzyypaarasTeam

...it is starting to become evident to me that I am in well out of my depth
  141. kalucky0Team

    how is {} not precise
  142. cr24Team

also the match case is not that ugly it makes a lot more sense
  143. AzzyypaarasTeam

% is what I use in minecraf modding so % is better
  144. gudenau

%016lX tells you exactly what it wants and what it will print.
  145. cr24Team

that code only looks weird because of the print statements
  146. kalucky0Team

{}016lX tells you exactly what it wants and what it will print.
  147. gudenau

I have never seen that before.
  148. kalucky0Team

    I was just mocking you
  149. gudenau

Also apparently people like {} because it can leak secrets which is concerning.
  150. kalucky0Team

    what
  151. gudenau

Apparently it recursively prints out all the variables in objects. Even the private ones.
  152. kalucky0Team

I've never seen that behavior and didn't test it
  153. gudenau

So they were wrong about their favorite language again. Why do I still take what he says at face value?
  154. kalucky0Team

Who was wrong, why are you trusting people without testing :concernedtater:(edited)
  155. gudenau

    Zeb.
  156. kalucky0Team

Ok then This conversation has no more reason to be continued I can't convince you and you can't convince me We shall remain with our own opinions
  157. gudenau
