It's hard to get anyone who isn't already on irc on irc easier to get people on matrix via element, so kinda impractical
Plus you can bridge from matrix to discord easily, irc is slightly harder and I don't know if xmpp can do that at all(edited)

i dont have any hosting so i just use a small matrix homeserver and a discord-matrix bridge that is publically hosted
