my only concern would be that they would look a lot like moas
so we'd ahve 2 big bird mobs which is sorta weird
I do think a 'pet' mob that turns into an item when it dies is a neat idea, and you would probably want it to drop the item directly into the owner's inventory for cases like dying in lava or the void or cactus for example
it could also work for a boss/miniboss that allows for it to be respawnable

That's why I had it use shears
... technically speaking, feathers are hooked up to blood circulation and this would hurt... Maybe you're helping it shed naturally?

But part of the mythos is that the phoenix revives after dying
But it's also a bit dark thinking what to do with that
It could be a day-night cycle related thing

The OG concept is that the Phoenix only drops a single feather item on shearing, and only drops it's ashes (which isn't useful for anything beyond revival) on death(edited)
