Replying tocr24as main artist I decided that geckolib was not the right fit for our armors or entities…
I don't want to go into your decision making, I just wanna share my experience. My goal was to create custom armor models. I was also considering to go without GeckoLib, but after investigating the task in details, I realized how I want this to be creative challange and not a coding nightmare. (For reference: Immersive Armors implemented this on their own, and their maintenance work mainly goes into this, at the point when I checked, they had around 200 commits just focusing on armor model). I realized its just not worth it, so I gave GeckoLib a shot. Initially I faced a problem. The BlockBench template for this usecase is wastly inaccurate, pivot points and stuff are all over the place. After fixing this, and understanding how groups and bones effect eachother, I was able to create models with virtually zero limitations. And the rest of the creative process was very smooth overall. I discovered an issue regarding enchant glint rendering, and they also fixed it based on my report (so big thumbs up for this). My takeaway is that, they are using a well established data format, they have basically a team to maintain just the library. So I realized I could hardly create a better framework. I think well established tools like this, can greatly help shifting the focus from getting lost technicalities to work on creative stuff.

Yeah I understand why you might want to use it, I didn't really have a problem with it but it didn't feel like it was the right fit for PL specifically, I think it gives too many opportunities to break minecraft's style where instead some minor model adjustments that can be done in 1 commit can be used to add detail to a model, which is all I believe should be done before you start straying from minecraft style. The original phoenix armor in PL was a very detailed with extra tufts of feathers around the armor, but was reduced to only a protruding beak, but otherwise a regular modelled set of armor, which imo better suits the style we were going for. No need for us to create a separate library, as we just don't need/want models that complex- 👍2
- NI do want to add I have not had too many issues with custom armor models using vanilla + Fabric API alone. In fact, it allowed me to port it much faster to 1.19.4 + snapshots, which is important for the case of supporting the upcoming armor trims.

14:05I am curious to see if/how Geckolib will support that, after all I think we can expect 1.20 rolling out around summer(edited) - C

Yeah it was surprisingly extremely easy to add to armor with fabric API, I'd assume geckolib armors would need a custom overlay or something since they aren't a specific size at all - E

would love to have seen that ingame, (MY OPINION) the current phoenix armor kinda looks like a set of pajamas or walking around in a sleeping bag - D
