The dream of making a mod is dead, but now that I have time, I want to learn making datapacks
I mean, thats a far easier way to allow people play on a server without having to install a large amount of mods and see what works for one or for other-

its true but datapacks can be limiting unless you have a resource pack which they have to download anyways
but now is one of the best times to work on datapacks with all the new item component shenanigans

yeah datapacks are limiting in that you cant really chnage blocks or add new ones but you can kinda add new ones with trickery that can do limited things...

Soon, maybe. Mojang has been hard at work making blocks datapackable the last few updates.

I recall there only being a way to change certain properties like making certain blocks act slippery
